Banana & Sultana Porridge | Eat Your VegForgive me for this ever-so-simple recipe today. But it only recently occurred to me I’ve made more Banana & Sultana Porridge than absolutely anything else in my life. Truly. For the past four and a half years, ever since Francesca was a weaning baby, I’ve consistently made this exact same breakfast several times a week. And it seems odd for it to not make an appearance somewhere on my site!. It used to be most mornings when F & J were smaller, but nowadays I probably only make it two or three times a week. And even after four and a half years I still have the same warm glow of satisfaction knowing their tummies are full of oats, milk and two of their five a day before 8am (actually in our house of early risers that’s normally 7am!). And with with zero added sugar.

One very simple tip when making porridge for littlies is to stir something cold in at the end of the cooking to cool the porridge down to eating temperature as rapidly as possible, which mashed bananas (or other fruit) and a dash of milk are perfect for. Saves on a few all too precious minutes in a morning!

Feel free to vary your fruit. My kids used to love their porridge with pureed apple, pear or mashed mango in place of the banana, and chopped apricots instead of the sultanas, but have long since scorned my fruity diversity in favour of their beloved bananas and sultanas. And you really don’t need to add any additional sugar, the fruit adds plenty of natural sweetness.

A brilliant recipe for babies too. Full of goodness and a great way to fill little tums. I regularly used to make this all times of the day when Francesca was tiny and prone to much foodie fussiness. It was something substantial, healthy and caloric I knew she’d always eat.

Since Fruit is the theme of this month’s Breakfast Club I’m entering my post to the event, this month hosted by Michelle of Utterly Scrummy

300ml full fat or semi-skimmed milk, organic if possible
1 banana, mashed

1) Place the oats, sultanas and most of the milk in a small saucepan

3) Cook for a few minutes, until you have a very thick and creamy consistency
4) Meanwhile mash the bananas and divide between two bowls
5) Pour the porridge over the banana, add a splash of milk and stir the lot together. My kids love doing this bit themselves
