Eat Your Veg | Orange & Cranberry Roasted Brussels Sprouts

There’s been an inordinate amount of sweet stuff of the blog lately. Not at all my usual style, but hey it’s christmas and there’s nothing wrong with a few treats here and there. But it’s nice to be back with a veggie recipe. And not just any veggie, but the glorious Brussels Sprout no less.

We happen to love sprouts in our house. Weirdly the kids have always been partial which is a tad fortunate, I don’t think I’ve ever had to coax them into eating them. Like most other veggies. Though they’re unquestionably sweeter and nuttier these days than the sprouts of my childhood, and no one seems to boil them to yellow mushball death anymore either. Thankfully.

My usual way of cooking sprouts is a simple steaming until they’re just tender and eating as is. But seeing as it’s christmas I do like to fancy up my veg a little for The Big Day. Bacon, butter and/or chestnuts are fine accompaniments. But this year I fancied going festively fruity and oven-roasting them with orange juice, cranberries and a little honey.

And gosh are they good. Divine. And totally addictive, I managed to eat the entire lot single-mouthed during the course of last sunday afternoon! To be honest I probably OD’ed on them, but we won’t go there. Interesting the kids didn’t like them at all like this, though would have scoffed the lot if they’d been plain steamed. Funny eh? I didn’t mind as it meant more for for greedy guts me. And they did eat a barrage of other veggies with their dinner.

The Good Stuff:

Brussels Sprouts (obviously!), Cranberries

Great For:

Toddlers, Pre-Schoolers, Big Kids, Grown Ups, Veggie Sides, Christmas, Special Dinners or Dinner Parties, Sprout Fanatics


Serves a family of 4, obviously double or treble up for a festive Christmas Day feast

Special Equipment:

A small roasting dish

Festive Orange & Cranberry Roasted Sprouts

Ingredients Prep Time:5 mins, Cook Time: 35 mins, Total Time: 40 mins

400g brussels sprouts, peeled weight
3 tablespoons orange juice
1 tablespoon rapeseed or olive oil
1 heaped teaspoon honey
black pepper and salt
30g dried cranberries

1) Preheat your oven to 200ºc/180ºfan/Gas Mark 6
2) Place your prepared sprouts in a small roasting pan or dish
3) Mix together the orange juice, oil, honey and a generous pinch of black pepper and salt
4) Pour the above over the sprouts and place in the hot oven for 30 minutes, tossing once or twice during the cooking time
5) Throw in the cranberries and bake for a further 5 minutes or until the sprouts are fully tender
