My Higgidy Pie Party!
March 10, 2014
Last friday night they piled round armed with rather too much booze and got stuck into a veritable pie fest. To go with the pies I served up a mountain of mash, actually two mountains, one of the normal buttery variety and the other a pimped up Leek & Mustard. All accompanied by lashings of Beef, Onion & Red Wine Gravy and way too many Veggies (Peas, Carrots, Roasted Roots, Cabbage with Caraway). And I even baked some decadently delicious Plain Chocolate Brownies with Raspberries and White Chocolate Chunks in the afternoon with Jacques for an easy puds (the recipe for which is far too naughty to publish on Eat Your Veg!)
As for the pies, I was sent two each of six varieties. Four meaties of Chicken Pot Pie with Ham and Leek, Venison, Cranberry & Red Wine Pie, Slow Cooked Steak & Red Wine Pie and British Beef, Stilton & Sussex Ale Pie. And two veggies of Spinach, Feta & Toasted Pine Nut Pie and Sweet Potato & Feta Pie with Pumpkin Seeds. There were lots of table pie deals going on and most people got to try at least two varieties and ALL were appreciatively gobbled. It was interesting that the most commented about were the two veggie pies as guests were genuinely surprised at how flavour-packed they were, particularly the Spinach, Feta & Pine Nut which I would highly recommend and shall be definitely purchasing. My personal next fave was the Beef, Stilton and Sussex Ale but then I think each and every pie was fabulous, by far exceeding everyone’s expectations. The only slight, and really slight, niggle was that the Venision Pie was a teensy weensy bit over sweet. All the pies were truly outstanding, made of quality ingredients, great flavour combinations and beautifully crafted and presented. I’m pretty sure there were quite a few Higgidy converts amongst us, me most definitely.
Not only did Higgidy send me pies but a fun party pack of bunting, balloons, hats and name cards which as the wine flowed seemed like a very good idea!. And the kids were utterly delighted to find the remnants the morning after and spent a weekend playing ‘parties’ with them, thanks Higgidy. I also received a Higgidy apron and most exciting of all a copy of the Higgidy Cookbook which coincidentally has been on my Amazon wish list for a while now. Packed full of inspired pie recipes plus tarts, quiches, interesting sides, puds and top tips for perfect pastry. The Spiced Lamb Babotie Pie, Dauphinoise Potato & Onion Pie and Rosti Topped Chicken & Pancetta Pie particularly wrestled my attention and I’m looking forward to getting busy baking.
I should probably have taken a few pics of the actual pie party, but in all honesty didn’t feel comfortable asking my newbie neighbours for a photo shoot too, even in return for dinner! So apologies for no pie-in-action shots. An enormous thanks to Higgidy for my Pie Party, very much enjoyed and appreciated by all, a truly fun night.
